An unexpected award from MTV has given Universal Music a boost in their efforts to establish the German teen band Tokio Hotel in America. The sales numbers of Tokio Hotel’s music in the American online music store iTunes have climbed steadily over the past few days, on Tuesday, their album ‘Scream’ was at position 19 in the charts. On Sunday, the band won the ‘Best New Artist’ award at the annual MTV Video Music Awards.
Universal launched a campaign this year to make the band a success in the US, too. “The American market is the largest in the world, so we’re investing more money to establish Tokio Hotel there than in any other country,” the head of Universal Germany, Frank Briegmann, told our newspaper. It’s a daring experiment, because the US is said to be a tough market in which few strangers become stars, especially if they’re not from English-speaking countries. One of the few real, big German successes was singer Nena with her song ‘99 Red Balloons’ in 1983. But Universal felt encouraged by Tokio Hotel’s great success in other countries to try their luck in the US. Tokio Hotel had their breakthrough in Germany in 2005 and landed hits in countries like France and Poland soon after.
This spring, the band released their first English record, ‘Scream’, in America and made it to position 39 in the Billboard charts. Sales went back a bit after that, which Briegmann claims to have anticipated from the start: “More effort and work is required in America. We knew that from the beginning.” Briegmann feels reassured by online sales numbers after the award now, and hopes that the album will return to the Billboard charts. According to him, Tokio Hotel have sold 105000 records so far; Briegmann hopes it’ll be 500000, ultimately. To keep up a steady presence, Universal wants to send Tokio Hotel back on their third American tour this November. Briegmann states that because of the focus on America, other of the band’s target markets like Asia will have to wait a little longer.

What about the album they need time to record? What about just giving the band a break!! didn't they take the warning they were given in april when Bill got sick? or does he need to damage his vocal chords completely before he has timme off? So I suppose because they return to America they won't come to the EMAs...if thats the case, I guess we can see how their prorities lie with us Even with the emas in the UK...they still wont come back to us.
As a side note, that karaoke thing is brilliant!!! I think I've found a new thing to be addicted to online xD

NEVER!! i've been a fan in one and a half year, and i've stood by them, even due they cancelled two of the concerts I were going to, and went straight to america as fast as bill got healty.. my patience is so used up, that i don't even have words for it.... I guess (being American) I have a hard time being angry at the boys staying here. If you think about it, I waited about three years for them to come over here. I\'ve only been overseas once, and that one time got me hooked onto Tokio Hotel. So I\'m kinda upset that everyone is complaining so much. They can\'t be everywhere at once, and we actually have to share. I also want to comment about that rude comment about Bill being a girl. Lets just say that I\'m am so pissed off, that I may get violent. I wish they would stop calling him a girl. There is no way you can mistake Bill for a girl, and Tokio Hotel worlwide fans are going to be on the warpath.

Like I understand it's hard but have you guys even tried to get them over in the UK or tell them that you are mad? And if you did that's great, but you have to be patient. Seriously, you can't have everything you want. America is so hard to become famous in, I've heard more bad stuff about Tokio hotel then good. And ofcourse America is somewhere they would like to dominate but they can't just do it all of a sudden. They will always return to europe and to their home roots. AND THEY HAVE NOT CHANGE! THEY WILL ALWAYS BE WHO THEY ARE! I still don't understand how people can say that you don't love a band anymore. To me, that tells me you never loved them because no matter what TH does I will always love them the same. I;m pretty sure they aprreciate the europian fans just as much as the american fans. Oh and the tour isn't even classified as true yet so calm down. Tokio Hotel aren't perfect but they try their best but they will always be a band for the fans (and themselves). To all the people who have said the cancled tour was unfair, your saying like the cyst in Bill thoart was his fault and he wanted it to happen. Just try to be patient. Like I'm not american, I haven't seen them live, I haven't even been in the same area as them but I try my hardest to be with them as much as possible. All I want is for them to be happy...and then I'll be happy but please don't give up on Tokio Hotel....

They really like America, but they started out in Europe, so they'll always feel a special attatchment to it. Their fans just have to be patient, it's going to be a difficult transition from being a European band to a World famous band. And Tokio Hotel just needs support. Stop putting so much pressure on them! Us American fans can deal with them spending a little more time in Europe if they need to, which they do, so they just need to focus on Europe for a little bit right now, and stop trying to be uber-popular so quickly here. Trust me, the fans are taking care of it pretty well. People in America have heard of them now, and it can only go up from here, Tokio Hotel needs to focus on a new CD, then focus on Europe before they come to America afterwards. We can wait. We've gone 3 years without TH, and while we are proud of them for being so successful recently, Europe still needs some TH loving ^_^ But everyone, be patient, we can't all have TH at once! We all love TH equally. And don't anyone dare get mad at TH! Let them enjoy themselves while they're still young!
